Box Freestone Quarry

Part 3

The wedges in the ceiling, known as 'cleats', were used to predict ceiling collapses. If the wedges fell out, then the cracks were opening and a rock fall was likely.

Looking up a big air shaft.

Max taking a breather.

Steep stone steps, leading up.

At the top of the steps was a very tall, and very rusty ladder that would have led to the surface, (now blocked). Max only climbed about three rungs before deciding it was likely to collapse.

Ben leading the way back down.

We stopped for a break, as all of us were shattered.

'O.T.' made us all a cup of tea.

Ben liked it so much, he had two cups!

M.O.D. PROPERTY, DO NOT TRESPASS

Too late!

We now entered a section of many roof collapses. Our guides were particularly excited when we came across a fresh one...

These walls were built to contain 'deads', waste rock. Note that no cement was used, they're held together by gravity only.

Max spots a small gap to climb up.
