Old Warden Tunnel

Part 2

There was a little light at the end of the tunnel for us to head towards.

The daylight soon gave way to darkness and without powerful torches we wouldn't have been able to go further.

Every few yards along the tunnel were these alcoves that were used by workers on the track. If they heard a steam train they would jump into one of these.

Most of the tunnel was black with soot from the steam trains.

In several places the tunnel walls were falling apart.

About half way through we could hear running water and soon came across a very wet section with water entering from the roof.

Shortly after the wet section, it became dry again, and the ground was covered with fine sand.
