Watlington ROC Monitoring Post

(Opened 1959, Closed 1991)

Situated about 15 miles of west of High Wycombe, the first ROC Post was surprisingly easy to find.

The large block on the right of the picture is the entrance hatch. The smaller block on the left is a ventilation shaft, which was also used to carry wires to an antenna that would have been attached where the the black circular dome is. The large pipe in the middle is the "Fixed Service Meter" tube, which was used to measure radiation levels. Half way between this and the ventilation shaft is the "Bomb Power Indicator" tube, (quite small), which fed an instrument to measure the strength of a blast.

Unfortunately the post was on the land of a very busy farm, so it wasn't possible to sneak in without getting spotted.

We decided to take a few pictures and move on to the next one on our list.
